Already smashing records over here.

I recently started running. Again. (there’s a lot to unpack there, but we’ll shelf that for another time). Part of my inspiration in getting my butt in gear and dusting off my tennis shoes was listening to an episode of The A Few Things podcast with Coach Chris Bennett, Global Head Coach for Nike. In between him selling the magic of being a runner and coming off as just a super like-able person, he explained something about starting running for the first time in a way that I’d never thought of before; no run will ever be as good as your very first run. Your very first run is the run where you break all of your previous records, set your fastest time and go the longest distance up until that point because up until that point, your records are all 0’s. He made the point that the long list of victories set by going from nothing to something is incredible and should be celebrated. The run after that one is where you begin to remember that running is the worst and why would anyone ever want to do this and leaving the couch was a terrible, terrible idea.

Continuing this metaphor until I’ve beaten it into the ground (which is essentially my signature writing style btw), that’s what today was. The first run. Going from keeping this little daydream all to myself for years in fragments and static, to yelling it on a megaphone to the internet. A few paragraphs with big, bold statements later and you’ve got yourself a girl, sitting in front of her computer, with no idea where this whole thing will end up, feel like a freaking rockstar. The texts and comments and likes and follows are the equivalent of me stepping out my front door, running 100 yards and calling it Olympic Gold. This was the easiest it will ever be.

Tomorrow will be harder when the surge of likes and comments don’t trigger the instagram algorithm to push my post to the top of everyones list and I’m back here with my computer googling things like “how to make a break even analysis” (thanks, JB). And who knows, it might be another three months before I hit another victory, break another record. But I’m hoping that I am able to at least keep running, you know?

Thank you to everyone who left nice comments and sent me encouraging texts and told me my idea was great and followed the 400th instagram account that I’ve asked you to follow so far in my twenties. I (sort of) promise this will be (one of) the last ones (for now). I’m excited to share this process with you all. You’re all my favorite people ever.

Even the secret people who are reading this blog but will never admit it.
